Some Standard Prices for Private Events (booked directly with us)

Venue Hire

VAT is not included in any of the prices on this page

The prices shown on this page are for guidance, they are not a quotation for your specific event and they don't cover every possible customer requirement. We're very flexible and are happy to quote for your exact needs. VAT is added to all charges. For events before the end of February 2024 a 15% discount on the venue hire charge will be applied.

Compare us to other venues

We offer some furniture free of charge. There is no separate charge for use of the kitchen, or for coat rails. We do not require you to use caterers who will pay us commission and charge you more. There is no corkage charge. We do not charge for reasonable refuse disposal following your event.

Parties, Wedding Receptions and Other Events with Music and Dancing

The prices below are for all events that involve loud music and dancing.

Evening events with music and dancing can only be held on Fridays, Saturdays, or days when the following day is a public holiday. There are limits on the number of these events held in the museum - please see our availability information or ask about availability for your choice of date. Limited furniture is included, banqueting furniture is available at an extra charge.

Wedding/Civil Partnership Ceremonies

A supplement is payable if we host the Wedding/Civil Partnership Ceremony, conducted by a Registrar. This does not apply to non-legal ceremonies such as Humanist ceremonies but there may be a labour charge.

Receptions, dinners and other evening events without loud music or dancing

These prices are for social reception type events, launches, etc. where there is no lound music or dancing. Quiet background music is acceptable. The prices include our basic furniture of 10 tables and 35 non-upholstered chairs. If the basic furniture is not sufficient we can offer our banqueting furniture set at extra cost. See our furniture page for details. Quotations for evening business meetings and conferences are normally inclusive of all furniture and will make clear what is and is not included.

Reductions for local community organisations, and for charitable waterways organisations, may sometimes be offered.

Small Conferences and Meetings

Hire of small conference room only, for the times shown. Self-service refreshments are included at no extra charge. All tables and chairs are included.

Staff Charges

A duty manager is present for events in the exhibition galleries, but not for small meetings. We can provide staff to carry out all sorts of basic event tasks such as porters, bar staff, receptionists, cloakroom attendants, or staff to install basic decorations. We do not provide staff to serve or handle food prior to consumption. We will quote for your specific requirements but here are some standard prices for evening events:

We charge £80 to provide a porter for set-up work. If the porter is also required to wait until after a meal to help clear space for dancing after the meal, the charge depends on the schedule but £90 would be typical.

Evening Business Conferences

Please note that on Tuesdays to Fridays we start setting up and arranging furniture etc no earlier than 1630.

Storage

You hire the museum or conference room for a specific period of time. The price you pay for this does not include any use of the premises for storage outside the hire period. You are welcome to have things delivered after the start of the hire period and have everything taken away at the end of it. However, in many cases it is convenient to be able to have things delivered in advance, or left afterwards, for example overnight until next day. We offer the use of our conference room for storage purposes in connection with a function in the museum. The following are the most common customer requirements:

We do not allow storage of anything in the exhibition galleries during our opening hours to the public, or overnight after an evening function (An exception is sometimes made on Sunday nights). Access to the storage facility is of course only available when the museum is open, or by arrangement.

Refreshments, Furniture and Equipment Hire

We believe we offer excellent value for money compared to other interesting heritage venues in London. Our policy of allowing you to choose your own caterer means you can obtain the best deal on catering, which can often be the biggest cost at a function. If you are comparing us with other venues, check what's included in the price. We do not make an additional charge for: use of kitchen during the hire period, coat rails, use of our basic furniture.
