Compare us to other venues
We offer some furniture free of charge. There is no separate charge for
use of the kitchen, or for coat rails. We do not require you to use caterers
who will pay us commission and charge you more. There is no corkage charge. We
do not charge for reasonable refuse disposal following your event.
Parties, Wedding Receptions and Other Events with Music and
Dancing
The prices below are for all events that involve loud music and
dancing.
- 1630 - 2300 £1,450
- Daytime events on Mondays only - please ask for a bespoke quotation.
Evening events with music and dancing can only be held on Fridays, Saturdays, or days when the
following day is a public holiday. There are limits on the number of these
events held in the museum - please see our
availability
information or ask about availability for your choice of date. Limited
furniture is included, banqueting furniture is available at an extra
charge.
Wedding/Civil Partnership Ceremonies
A supplement is payable if we host the Wedding/Civil Partnership
Ceremony, conducted by a Registrar. This does not apply to non-legal ceremonies
such as Humanist ceremonies but there may be a labour charge.
- Friday and Saturday evenings £300
- Sundays to Thursday evening and Monday daytimes £200
- The supplement includes the labour for setting up and rearrangement
of furniture. Furniture has to be hired from us or from another source. If the
number of guests is under 75 a reduction in this charge may be quoted.
Receptions, dinners and other evening events without loud music or
dancing
These prices are for social reception type events, launches, etc. where
there is no lound music or dancing. Quiet background music is acceptable. The
prices include our basic furniture of 10 tables and 35 non-upholstered chairs.
If the basic furniture is not sufficient we can offer our banqueting furniture
set at extra cost. See our furniture page for
details. Quotations for evening business meetings and conferences are normally
inclusive of all furniture and will make clear what is
and is not included.

Reductions for local community organisations, and for charitable
waterways organisations, may sometimes be offered.
Small Conferences and Meetings
Hire of small conference room only, for the times shown. Self-service
refreshments are included at no extra charge. All tables and chairs are included.
Mondays to Sundays
- Times 1000 - 1630 £120 There is no half-day rate, this is the
minimum charge.
- To start at 0930 add £30
- To start at 0900 add £45

Staff Charges
A duty manager is present for events in the exhibition galleries, but
not for small meetings. We can provide staff to carry out all sorts of basic
event tasks such as porters, bar staff, receptionists, cloakroom attendants, or
staff to install basic decorations. We do not provide staff to serve or handle
food prior to consumption. We will quote for your specific requirements but
here are some standard prices for evening events:

We charge £80 to provide a porter for set-up work. If the porter
is also required to wait until after a meal to help clear space for dancing
after the meal, the charge depends on the schedule but £90 would be
typical.

Storage
You hire the museum or conference room for a specific period of time.
The price you pay for this does not include any use of the premises for storage
outside the hire period. You are welcome to have things delivered after the
start of the hire period and have everything taken away at the end of it.
However, in many cases it is convenient to be able to have things delivered in
advance, or left afterwards, for example overnight until next day. We offer the
use of our conference room for storage purposes in connection with a function
in the museum. The following are the most common customer requirements:
- Overnight following an evening function to 1600 next day
£60
- From 1000 on the day of an evening function until the start
£60
- From the end of a Saturday evening function until an agreed time on
the following Monday £120
- From 1000 Friday until a planned collection time on Monday

We do not allow storage of anything in the exhibition galleries during
our opening hours to the public, or overnight after an evening function (An
exception is sometimes made on Sunday nights). Access to the storage facility
is of course only available when the museum is open, or by arrangement.

Refreshments, Furniture and Equipment Hire
- Self service refreshments for meetings in the small conference room
are included in the hire charge.
- Hire of banqueting furniture 12 tables (5 foot diameter, round) and
120 chairs (upholstered seats, contoured back support). £250 for all
furniture or £200 for chairs only, e.g. for theatre style events.
£75 for round tables only. This price does not include labour for setting
up furniture at the start. (We can quote to do that if required). Putting-away
of all furniture is included in the basic charge for all events.
- Table covers. Disposable covers need not be an embarrassment! We provide covers that are close in appearance and feel to linen, although
single-use. Linen hire is always an option but high charges for delivery, collection, and any stains or other damage can make linen
an expensive option. Ask to see the material when you come to visit by appointment.
- Round single-use premium quality tablecovers - made of paper but feeling like cloth. £12 each with an overhang of
approximately 5 inches (14 cm). Available in black, dark red, cream or white. Notice period two weeks.
- Larger round single-use premium quality tablecovers - made of paper but feeling like cloth. £16 each, with an overhang of
approximately 17 inches (44 cm). Available in black, dark red, cream or white. Notice period three weeks.
- Oblong covers for our oblong tables (e.g. for bar or buffet) £7.00
per table (various colours available with notice)
- Tea/coffee/biscuits service using china cups and ground coffee
£1.85 per delegate present per serving session. At parties and weddings we generally quote a fixed price for this service
rather than a per-person price. This price depends on the schedule, the number of guests, and the rest of the staffing plan for the event so
cannot be quoted here. Typically it might be £80 for ingredients and equipment, not including the staff who would be part of the staffing plan for the event as a whole.
- Wine, flute, and soft drink glass hire £3 per dozen. Washing at the end is included.
- Data projector £45 (technical support is not provided at small
meetings)

We believe we offer excellent value for money compared to other
interesting heritage venues in London. Our policy of allowing you to choose
your own caterer means you can obtain the best deal on catering, which can
often be the biggest cost at a function. If you are comparing us with other
venues, check what's included in the price. We do not make an additional charge
for: use of kitchen during the hire period, coat rails, use of our basic
furniture.
