George Smith (1831 – 1895) of Coalville, wrote a famous book “Our Canal Population: A Cry from the Boat Cabins, with Remedy”, published in 1879. He was a social reformer and campaigned to improve the living conditions of the large number of people who lived and worked on board canal boats.
