Building Islington Tunnel. Building The Tunnel, Islington. The building of Islington Tunnel, which was completed largely in 1818 and opened in 1820. The picture shows a basket of materials being hoisted up or down through shafts that were built from the hillside above. There is also a railway, used for bringing materials in and out from the tunnel mouths. We can also see the timber frame that was used to support the roof whilst it was being lined with bricks. There are very few images surviving of the building of The Regent’s Canal.
