Cargo
20 minutes - 12 children at a time
Introduction
In this hands on workshop, children go inside the narrowboat Coronis and
investigate the everyday and exotic objects which were brought up the Regent's
Canal to London in the past. They compare them to objects in use today, and
explore the goods through touch and smell. They find out about raw materials
and their origins.
Learning Objectives
- To understand that narrow boats were a commonly used way of transporting
goods around the country in the past.
- To learn that canal transport was almost completely superseded by railway
and later by road transport
- To understand the meaning of the word "cargo"
- To identify a selection of commonly found materials by feel and by smell
National Curriculum
- History: Historical Enquiry 4a & b, Breadth of Study 6b
- Science Sc3 Materials & Their Properties 1a, b, c, & d;
Breadth of Study 1a
Differentiation
- All children will learn that narrow boats were used to transport a variety
of goods in the past.
- Most children will learn that they carried a variety of different cargoes,
and will be able to identify some of them.
- A few children will learn that canal transport was superseded by rail and
road because they were faster and more efficient carriers.
Will We See A Crocodile?
15 minutes
Introduction
This workshop introduces very young children to the kinds of sights that
they may see during a narrow boat ride on the canal. It is based around a
Powerpoint presentation, which contains photos of animals and structures that
they will see on their trip, some that they may, and some that they definitely
won't. It begins to give them an understanding of a typical canal landscape.
You can book this session to take place either on the boat if you are
returning by canal - or in the museum before you leave.
National Curriculum and QCA
- KS1 Geography: Geographical Enquiry & Skills 2a, b, & d; Knowledge
& Understanding of Places 3a, c, and d
Learning Objectives
- To explain the difference between a canal and a river.
- To introduce children to some of the bird and animal species that they may
see by the canal.
- To introduce children to some common canal side structures
- To introduce the idea of different habitats on the earth's surface, by
showing the children some animal species that they definitely will not see by
the canal.
Differentiation
- All children will learn the difference between a river and a canal, and
that not all animals can be seen in a canal landscape.
- Some children will learn to identify some of the structures and species of
animal & bird commonly found in a canal landscape
- A few children will begin to realise that the mixture of grass, trees &
water around the canal represents a discrete habitat for wildlife
Rosie's Story
15 minutes
Introduction
This is an interactive story-telling workshop delivered by a costumed
character. Availability is subject to availability of a suitable presenter.
Where an external presenter is brought in there may be an additional charge.
This workshop introduces very young children to the life that was lived by
canal families in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through Rosie's Story,
they learn the difference between a canal and a river, how the narrow boats
were propelled, what cargoes they carried and what purpose they served. They
are also introduced to the personal life of Rosie and her family on the boat.
National Curriculum
- KS1 History: Knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes
in the past : 2a & b: Historical Enquiry 4a & b: Breadth of Study
6b
Learning Objectives
- To explain the difference between a canal and a river.
- To explain how boats were moved along the canal before the advent of
engines..
- To learn what cargoes were most commonly carried from place to place on the
narrow boats.
- To understand how the lives of the canal families differed from life today.
Differentiation
- All children will learn the difference between a river and a canal, and
that narrow boats were pulled by horses..
- Some children will learn what some of the commonest narrow boat cargoes
were, and how the canal families lived
- A few children will be able to explain how the canal families lives were
different from their own.
Floating and Sinking
20 minutes
Introduction

This lesson introduces the concept of floating and sinking to young children.
It introduces the two forces of gravity & upthrust, and explores which
common materials will float, and which will not. Using plasticine, it examines
how shape affects whether a body of a certain mass will float or not.
National Curriculum
- KS1 Science Sc3 Materials & Their Properties Grouping Materials 1a, b,
c, & d
Learning Objectives
- To understand the meaning of the words "float" and
"sink".
- To introduce the concepts of gravity and upthrust
- To explore the buoyancy of a variety of common materials.
- To explore the influence of shape on the buoyancy on a body of a given mass
Differentiation
- All children will learn the meaning of the words float & sink, and be
able to group a selection of common materials according to whether they are
buoyant or not.
- Most children will learn that a balance between upthrust and gravity
control whether an object floats or sinks.
- A few children will understand that the shape of an object of given mass
will affect whether it floats or not.
Character Workshop - Mr Rimoldi
Introduction
This workshop introduces very young children to the way in which ice was
imported from Norway, stored in the ice house, and then distributed around
London by Carlo Gatti's business.. Through The Ice Man, they learn that ice is
frozen water, and very useful for keeping food fresh, and attractive to eat.
They understand that before freezers were invented, natural ice had to be
imported and stored. They also learn a little about the hard working life of
the ice man.
This workshop is subject to availability of a presenter and should be booked
well in advance.
Learning Objectives
- To understand the difference between liquid water & ice.
- To understand some of the many ways in which ice can be used by man
- To learn where ice came from before the advent of freezers
- To understand how the lives of the canal families differed from life today.
National curriculum
- KS1 History: Knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in
the past : 2a & b: Historical Enquiry 4a & b: Breadth of Study 6b
- KS1 Science Sc3 Materials & Their Properties Changing Materials 2b
Differentiation
- All children will learn the difference between water & ice, and that
Carlo Gatti ran an ice importing business .
- Some children will learn where the imported ice came from, and how it was
used once it arrived in the UK.
- A few children will understand how the ice was distributed around London,
and how the ice man's working conditions differed from working life today.
